Ronaldo celebrates his dramatic free kick goal. |
A thrilling 3-3 draw between Spain and Portugal ended an exciting second day of BISERGS action. Love him or hate him, Cristiano Ronaldo knows how to win. The guy has won the last three Champions Leagues and the European Championships two years ago and tonight he carried his Portugal team into the lead twice in the first half and then back from defeat with an incredible free kick late in the match. It was expected to be the best game of the first round and by all accounts, it was. In the day's earlier matches the energetic Egyptians gave Uruguay all they had and nearly snatched a draw without their star player Mohamed Salah, but in the end a fantastic header from a last minute free kick gave Uruguay all three points. Morocco had almost all of the possession in the second game, but Iran looked dangerous on the counter attack. Just when it looked like the result would be a goalless draw, Iran earned a free kick deep in the Morocco end. Tragically for the Moroccans, their striker, who was called back to defend, headed the ball into his own net handing the match to Iran and making it impossible to imagine Morocco getting out of this difficult group.
In the BISERGS there was plenty of movement on the leader board, but Doug and Annika remain on top with their strong Russia performance. Dawn, James and Rachel all sit a slim 1/4 point off the leaders. Each of them have had two teams see action so far.
