Many BISERGS dreams are dependent on deep runs by France and Argentina this summer. Those two nations have experienced the joy of lifting the trophy at the end of the tournament and they will make their 2018 starts today. Of greater interest to me though is plucky Iceland who have shocked the world again and again over the past three years. It is time for Shelby, Ari, Kelley, Sharleen and I to learn the Tunderclap. They are the smallest nation ever to play in the World Cup. In fact Iceland has the population of Stockton, CA. Can you imagine the city of Stockton trying to put together a soccer team and then qualify to play in the World Cup? That is something the entire nation of America wasn't able to do and it is much easier to make the World Cup out of North America than it is from Europe. I'm definitely a fan and am very happy that they ended up on my BISERGS roster, even if their chances of a win against Argentina today are extremely slim. Speaking of Argentina, before the tournament there was a lot of discussion of whether it would be Ronaldo or Messi that would claim the title of the best player of this generation. After Cristiano's performance last night, Messi has a lot to live up to. In other action, a key Denmark vs Peru match will have a huge impact on which of those teams advances to the next round and Nigeria hopes to avenge the two heartbreaking late goals that their fellow African nations, Egypt and Morocco, suffered yesterday. Nigeria plays an underrated Croatian team that hopes to go a long ways in Russia. The day's first game will see Australia battling to keep out the potent French attack.
With 8 teams in action, nearly every BISERGSer has a chance to score some points today. Who will end day 3 on top? If the French win the first match as expected Dawn will be on top for at least a few hours. Leaders Doug and Annika are both resting for a second day in a row.
